The airport in Kuala Lumpur is deceptive. While it bills itself as one airport with two "terminals," I beg to differ. There are definitely two distinct airports - KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal). We normally fly Thai Airways from BKK to KL, and land at the KLIA side. But for weekend trips, the best airline is Air Asia (an Asian version of Southwest or Airtran) which only takes off from the LCCT side. I maintain these are two different airports because you cannot walk from one "terminal" to the other - you must take a 30 minute bus or taxi ride.
After some confusion we arrive at the correct terminal and take a seat for the one-hour flight northwest to Langkawi. It was expected to rain some of the weekend, but we are still in the rainy season after all. Husband had found a beautiful hotel - The Danna - for our weekend away and ohmygoodness it was absolutely fantastic.
The sun came out just as we arrived:
Gorgeous tiles:
After reading some books and working on our tan, we headed out to the nearby mountain, and made some new friends along the way:
Once at the park, we started the lovely gondola ride up to the top:
And the view looking back was amazing -
Neighbors:
Half-way up we got hopped off at an observation station to catch these sights:
And finally at the top, we look north and that's Thailand!
The whole bay looking south to Langkawi:On the way back down, a turtle catches the last rays of sun.
A week of work in between and we were ready for the next weekend's adventure. Another trip out to LCC, another flight on Air Asia. This time it was slightly closer, to Penang and Georgetown in particular. I found the cutie hotel on agoda - Love Lane 23. How adorable is this??
Indoor-outodor wood tub bath too!
Tiles everywhere, really warm tones.
We set about exploring the neighborhood and founds some real gems. Upkeep vs. no-upkeep:
Love Lane. These wired art pieces were scattered across the city and really pretty neat.
Lunch time - 30 cent bowls of noodles and pork and a glass of cold tea.
An old school by the waterfront:
Fishing boats at rest:
'Sploring by bike.
After a quick nap at our place, we head back out for the night. Here's a few more of Love Lane - so cute!
This is so cool, and one of my favorite things that was all around in DC too - when buildings have the year they were built on the side.
Lovely sidewalk cafes and music floating out to the streets:
Peeking at a temple from the streetside.
Clouds have a mind of their own tonight:
Kinda looks like the moto is looking at you, huh?
Who can resist balloon-making clowns??
We can't!
More inanimate objects that look like people -
Goodnight Penang.
